But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit

  - Titus 3:4,5, the Bible (nkjv)

We find here, simply expressed, an important statement regarding how we cannot be saved, and likewise a statement regarding the only way to be saved from sin and God's righteous judgment. First we read, "not by works of righteousness which we have done". Many religions say otherwise. They tell you to do your best, try your hardest, and hope against hope that God will assess your good works as somehow outweighing your sin and accept you into His home and family. But here God tells us that salvation does not come by our works of righteousness.

How then can I be saved? Only by the mercy of God. My sin demands His wrath, but we read of Jesus Christ,

He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

  - 1 Peter 2:24, the Bible (nasb)

We read in Mark chapter 5 of a man under the influence of a host of demons: "Constantly, night and day, he was screaming amoung the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones." The Lord Jesus Christ had mercy on that man, set him free from the evil spirits, and gave him new life.

When we hear of a man like that, perhaps it is easy for us to see how such a man or woman stands in need of the mercy of God. But if we are to be saved, we must see ourselves likewise in need of His mercy. By the grace of God, you may have lived a very different life than that man. Perhaps others would see you as a good person, someone they look up to. But when we begin to see ourselves as God sees us, we understand that, "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).

It was tremendous mercy on the part of God that led Him to make His Son an offering for sin. Are you grateful for the mercy of God? Have you seen that it was for you? Can you sing the following words from your heart?

Mercy there was great and grace was free,
Pardon there was multiplied to me,
There my burdended soul found liberty-
At Calvary.
